DescriptionLong 73" sweetgrass braid that is larger near the top and tapers down toward the bottom. The item is tied at the top and bottom with a single strip of leather. The sweetgrass is still green in some areas and has dried out in others. There are three broken off pieces in a bag with the item. Kelli Mosteller states, "The sweetgrass braid was a gift from Walpole Island First Nation to CPN. It was personally gifted from Chief Daniel R. Miskokomon to Chairman Barrett at the Tribal Leaders' Meeting on Fri., July 29th. Walpole Island is well known for their sweetgrass and several tribal members make their living by making craft items with sweetgrass and teaching crafting classes". NOTE: Joyce Johnson (Director of the Walpole Island Heritage Centre) states, "To keep the braid in good condition, the best is to keep it out of direct sunlight, keep it in cased [sic], but every three or four weeks let air at it. If you find the aroma being depleted from the braid, wrap it in a damp cloth overnight and that should restore the aroma. But it is very important to keep it out of direct sunlight as that will dry out the braid".Collections
